Assistant Commissioner David MELVILLE
Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE is a career police officer with over 25 years sworn service in both the Commonwealth Police Force (now AFP) and the Queensland Police Service.
Upon being sworn-in he served at stations in and around Brisbane and, in 1982 he took an appointment as a Police Prosecutor at Beenleigh. In late 1983 he transferred to Gympie Prosecution Corps where he was responsible for Magistrate Court prosecutions at both Gympie and Tewantin (now Noosa Heads) Magistrates Courts. During his career he served in a number of capacities including an appointment in 1990 to the Fitzgerald implementation Unit for North Coast Region where he took a key role, with others, in implementing significant change to the Queensland Police in that region.
In mid 1992 he was promoted to Inspector at the Queensland Police Service Academy. He was later promoted to Superintendent in 1994 and Chief Superintendent in February 1997. As Chief Superintendent he carried out duties as the Executive Manager, Human Resource Development Branch; Operations Co-ordinator, South Eastern Region and Command Co-ordinator, Operations Support Command. He has also acted for periods during that time as Director, Human Resources Division and Assistant Commissioner in the South Eastern Region and Operations Support Command.
Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE is to take up his position as Assistant Commissioner, South Eastern Region on 10 February, 2003. He has extensive experience in planning, police management and administration and professional development of staff. He has been both Chair and a member of numerous committees at both a national and State level including more recent activity associated with developing national and State Counter Terrorism arrangements. He was a Police Operations Commander and involved in the planning for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2001 and 2002.
He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and has been a Visiting Fellow at the Australian Institute of Police Management. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Public Administration and International Association of Chiefs of Police. He has completed tertiary studies at Griffith University and the University of New England.
Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE was awarded the Australian Police Medal as part of the Queens Birthday Honours list in July 1998. He was also awarded the National Medal for good conduct and service and the Queensland Police Service Medal during the 1990's.
Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE acknowledges that the South Eastern Region is a complex and challenging work environment for police. He argues that a variety of policing techniques and styles are needed to meet these challenges. He believes the involvement of the community and other agencies in bringing about a holistic problem solving approach to policing issues is fundamental to establishing and maintaining a safe and secure community and this is an aim which will be strongly pursued by Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE within the South Eastern Region.
