Commissioner of Police

Commissioner Bob Atkinson

The Queensland Police Service provides policing 24 hours a day to almost four million Queenslanders and over seven million people who visit the State each year. Queensland covers more than 1.7 million square kilometres, is seven times the area of the United Kingdom, twice the size of Texas and five times the size of Japan. The State is one of the most decentralised in Australia.

To serve this dispersed population, the Queensland Police Service has more than 11,500 employees, of whom around 9,000 are police officers with staff working in very different conditions, in 438 police stations, 33 neighbourhood Police Beats and 45 Police Beat Shopfronts from Cape York and the Torres Strait to the Sunshine and Gold Coast Coasts to the remote far west.

The Service's fleet consists of 1,811 cars, 88 motorcycles and 65 other vehicles including 'booze buses'. The Service's four fixed-wing aircraft recorded 2,450 flight hours and a fleet of 53 vessels patrol Queensland waters. The 22 horses in the mounted unit and 64 police dogs are also used in a range of policing operations
It is from this extensive resource base that we respond to calls for service and local law and order issues, which represent the 'core business' of the Queensland Police Service. Performance in this area is directly linked to the achievement of the Queensland Government Priority 'safer and more supportive communities'.

As events continue to unfold both domestically and internationally, maintaining public order and community safety are the priorities of the Service. The Service remains committed to the achievement of safer and more supportive communities. To this end, the organisation will continue its strong focus on the 4Ps - Performance, Professionalism, People and Partnerships.

Upon being sworn-in he served at stations in and around Brisbane and, in 1982 he took an appointment as a Police Prosecutor at Beenleigh. In late 1983 he transferred to Gympie Prosecution Corps where he was responsible for Magistrate Court prosecutions at both Gympie and Tewantin (now Noosa Heads) Magistrates Courts. During his career he served in a number of capacities including an appointment in 1990 to the Fitzgerald implementation Unit for North Coast Region where he took a key role, with others, in implementing significant change to the Queensland Police in that region.

In mid 1992 he was promoted to Inspector at the Queensland Police Service Academy. He was later promoted to Superintendent in 1994 and Chief Superintendent in February 1997. As Chief Superintendent he carried out duties as the Executive Manager, Human Resource Development Branch; Operations Co-ordinator, South Eastern Region and Command Co-ordinator, Operations Support Command. He has also acted for periods during that time as Director, Human Resources Division and Assistant Commissioner in the South Eastern Region and Operations Support Command.

Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE is to take up his position as Assistant Commissioner, South Eastern Region on 10 February, 2003. He has extensive experience in planning, police management and administration and professional development of staff. He has been both Chair and a member of numerous committees at both a national and State level including more recent activity associated with developing national and State Counter Terrorism arrangements. Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE acknowledges that the South Eastern Region is a complex and challenging work environment for police. He argues that a variety of policing techniques and styles are needed to meet these challenges. He believes the involvement of the community and other agencies in bringing about a holistic problem solving approach to policing issues is fundamental to establishing and maintaining a safe and secure community and this is an aim which will be strongly pursued by Assistant Commissioner MELVILLE within the South Eastern Region.
